Many victims of smartphone theft would be willing to pay big or even put themselves in physical danger get their devices back, according to a new report by mobile security firm Lookout.

According to Lookout, 32 percent of victims surveyed say they would be somewhat to extremely willing to pay $500 just to retrieve personal information from their stolen device. One-third of victims say they'd pay $1000.

Perhaps even more surprising was the fact that 68 percent of victims were willing to put themselves in some danger to get their device with all their precious data.

If it's stolen I wouldn't stress myself over it.

If I dropped it, in an unusual place (like in nature) and it was near a cliff or something but retrievable, I would try to pick it up.

I don't 'store personal information' on anything that leaves the house, including my 'to go' laptop, or my phone.

AND I don't even save the password for Off Topix, or anything else, on my laptop that stays in the living room.

If you get take one of them, or hack into it, you essentially get information that is already public domain (a few email addresses and some phone numbers) and that's it.

Whoopee

So if it falls in the lake while I'm fishing, I'm not going to rent diving gear to go get it.

And I'm not paying a ransom for it.

As for the laptops....

Stories and other files are backed up on various flash drives, including one that is 'off site' that I update on a more or less regular basis by swapping out with the one that is right here.

It's story time guys! Alright let me start off by saying that I am twenty one years old right now and this story took place 5 years ago. We've all been stupid teenagers trying to fit in and stay relevent in our inner circle.

Well one night I went out drinking with some friends, yes alcohol. We got kicked out of my friends house by his older sister so we took the alcohol and moved across the street to a school yard. It was around 11 PM and one of my friends brought out some Marijuana, I had smoked before I was never a huge smoker and never while already intoxicated by alcohol.

Let's just say I ended up leaving my keys and Blackberry on the stairs at the school yard. Why I did this I have no idea. Everyone started to split up and go home so I did the same. My friend was really drunk and she was afraid of going home and getting in trouble so I decided to let her stay with me. My mom always loved her and thought she was the only friend I had who was worth keeping, so I knew she wouldn't mind. But silly me forgot my keys and Blackberry on the stairs. I carried my friend all the way to my house, about a 20-25 minute walk only to find out my keys were missing.

I started to panic and I sat down for a moment to try and figure out where everything else, right as I remember my friend vomits all over my stairs, luckily she missed me. I knew I couldn't leave her alone because she obviously wasn't feeling well so I carried her all the way back to the school yard and tried to hunt down my stuff. After 20 minutes of searching in the dark I found everything, luckily I was the last one to leave so no one else noticed that I left it behind. And of course my friend passed out on the stairs while I was searching for everything so I had to pick her up and carry her back home, again...

So how far would I go to retrieve my smart phone, well I'd carry a 110lb girl around for over an hour. Although, I think I was more worried about my keys since no one was home at the time and we'd be stuck outside till god knows when.
I realize that this isn't exactly the topic of conversation but I thought it would be a funny/sad story to share :P

@Lugassy: I enjoyed reading your story. I'm glad it worked out for you in the end.
