How many months to properly train a puppy?

How many months does it take to properly train a puppy to learn the basics?

When I was growing up, my mom and dad never trained our dogs, so they had free reign to do what they wanted. We didn't have a fenced in yard, so we let them out the front door and they pretty much kept to our house...well, mostly.

And then when I got my own dog, I didn't train her except to "sit". I guess if I get another dog, I would want more training, but how long would that take?

Let's see, when our old Poodle died, he was every bit of 18 years old..... He had us trained pretty well to do what he wanted us to do for him.

So I'll say that.

I don't think that you can put a time limit on that.
I'd say that it all depends on how 'smart' or 'stupid' the dog is; some people generalize this by breed......like it takes a lab puppy two years of training before they 'learn' to stop digging holes in the yard or under the fence. ??????????????? I disagree with that idea, I think it depends on the individual dog.
