If forum moderators were actually employees with a regular paycheck, how much do you think they should get paid?

Being a paid employee, do you think their duties should be more extensive than the average 'volunteer moderator'?

A shiny penny.

I dunno, it wouldn't be much. It would only be a couple of dollars a week, far below minimum wage.

When I eventually release some video games (it'll happen one day, I swear) I'll likely pay for some community management, which will be somewhere around minimum wage (which is actually pretty decent where I live).

It's not unusual to see offers for around $50/month or so. It's hard to really make money online nowadays anyway. For a small forum, $50-75 monthly seems (comparatively) like a fair offer in today's day and time.

Needless to say, that's far below minimum wage. It's more like a "I need some spare cash" type of deal. :P

Pardon me while I borrow the format of a successful ad campaign that has been running for awhile and just came on during the Olympics.

To PAY a Mod, or Admin, or whatever, the forum needs to be making money.

To make money, a forum has to sell ads.

To make money off ads, they have to track "user exposures" and "clicks".

To be noticed and clicked on they have to be obnoxious.

To be obnoxious, they have to cause headaches, highjack browsers, or download crap you don't want on your computer.

If the ads are that obnoxious, users leave.

So if you want to keep your users, don't pay the damned mods.

Alternatively, the forum could be providing some sort of paid service, Doc.

I guess it'd be best to pay them by the hour. Unless they're online 24/7, it wouldn't be much of a pay check.

Well it should be at least minimum wage.
And subject to reviews quarterly.
Being paid MIGHT have some mods take the job a little more seriously , not suggesting that those in here don't. But i been in sites where the mods were bigger buffoons then some of it's members and of course they have the " power ".

I can't imagine actually paying the moderators for a forum, if the forum is so popular that the moderator deserves to be paid, why not merely add more moderators to lessen the workload. Other-wise, it's usually a relatively simplistic task for easy maintenance.
