Situation:

Let's say you've been in a relationship for over a year. The relationship is now becoming very serious. You are talking about moving in with one another. You then find out (and verify) that this person you've been in a relationship with has a criminal past. This person has been incarcerated several times and now carries the status of Felon.

Questions:

1. Should this person have told you?

2. When should this person have told you?

3. Would it matter to you that this wasn't disclosed?

1. Yes they should have told. It may possibly affect their ability in getting a job or whatever.

2. Preferably when the relationship startes getting serious.

3. Yess it would. Relationships are based on trust and if I found out from someone else that they had a criminal record then I would wonder what else they're hiding.

1. Yes.
2. As soon as it became serious.
3. Yes.

1. Absolutely. A Felon status can mean this person can no longer get a good job, drive a car or even vote in some cases.

2. I would have wanted to know right upfront before the relationship became serious. Why? It would have then been my choice if I wanted to even continue a relationship. After it got serious would probably rip my heart out.

3. Absolutely again. I agree with Dragon. Relationships are built on trust. After I found this out, I would NEVER trust this person again. Kicked to the curb....

I suppose it should have been discussed at some point, some people wait a year to say "I love you" to their partner, so maybe some people want to wait a year or more to divulge some more important secrets too.

They probably hide this stuff because they fear if the other person knew that they would never have given them a chance and they would probably be right judging by the responses given to this hypothetical situation.

I probably would have liked to know but in any case it doesn't change anything as long as what got them that status isn't going on in the present. Everyone screws up in life in different ways. Not all mistakes end up with you in a cell but that doesn't make them any less damaging.
