They said "I love you" for the first time, you aren't there yet. What do you do?
 
Let them know that I'm not there yet, just be up front about it. No reason not to. Better than lying or playing it off.

I had that happen before and me not saying it back ended up in that relationship ending. I am not going to tell someone "I love you" if I'm not in love with them. I told her that I felt a strong connection and really liked her, but that wasn't good enough. Oh well.

If you not reciprocating was all it took to end the relationship, then I assert that she wasn't actually in love with you in the first place.

If this happened to me, I'd make sure he knew how much I appreciated it and I would be very clear that I am not to that point. I won't even say "not to that point yet", because who knows if I will ever be IN LOVE with him? That's not a topic you want to mess around with or be vague and make promises you might not be able to keep. And anyone who would want you to in order for them to save face doesn't really get what it means to be IN love, anyway.

Good points. Also, the word "yet" doesn't belong in the conversation at all, I agree.
