What are your thoughts on Admins or forum owners that only bother to post or show their face when they're closing a thread, banning someone or making an announcement?

This depends on the size of the community. If it's a large forum there is usually a lot of behind the scenes going ons which will often prevent an admin from people visible in public. However, with that said, the administrators do need to make an attempt to be a member of the community and strengthen those relationships with his/her members.

Smaller forums don't really have an excuse. It should be the admins top priorty. Getting their post count up and keeping a positive relationship with the members to ensure they continue returning to the forum.

I don't think much of them to be honest. A good Admin is a part of the community and posts along with the members. They should be readily available in case a major problem arises.

Admins should always be active. Me and Jazzy are usually on at opposite times so there is usually an admin online or an admin will be there within a few hours.

We are active in the community and behind the scenes.. How good admins should be.

Didn't mean to toot my own horn there.

An admin who isn't active, especially on a smaller community, often means the forums will fail.

I agree with Jazzy and Nebulous entirely.

Just for clarification. When I said large forum I meant a forum with 10,000+ members.

I pretty much active a lot on my forum and I'm the only staff too.

One smaller forum I go on has two Admins, and neither of them really post around a lot. :

A good Admin posts around, and administrates. They should be active.

Ok Ok I hear ya !

Uh...so how are my peeps?

Whats going on with my buds.

Jesus.

I once was on a forum where the admins rarely appeared... the forum was getting worse the longer their inactivity was

I agree with most above post, Admin should take some time to actually post an be active in their own community, as you said for larger forums, 10k+ members it may be harder for the admin to be on every topic with update's & competition's, or future plans. Some owner's also work away from their computers, that can be a reason why they may be inactive getting a good staff may help out them.

My thoughts would be that they don't genuinely care for the community.

One forum I know of with 150,000+ members has a founding admin who still checks in every day to respond to feedback, suggestions and site questions. Most of his own threads are about introducing new features or the latest community achievement. He can be strict and sarcastic, but all members respect him as a fine administrator and his ability to look after the server-side. The everyday work of moderating and banning are left to site moderators.
