Inactive members are one thing, they can be expected as forums age and more people join.

Though, have you ever experienced inactive staff? As forum staff, the community is shaped by the effort put in by its staff. Staff should always be dedicated, active, and contributing to the forum's success.

I've had to deal with inactive staff in the past unfortunately. Life gets in the way or interest is lost, but I expect staff members to always give notice or update the forum owner if anything comes up to prevent demotion.

I think that's normal.
More when people do it for free... So yeah.

Demotion implies the loss of certain status and privileges that come with it. Unless the owner is actually paying (or compensating in some other way) their staff for their service, losing the staff status wouldn't mean anything, really. Sure, if they know they won't be able to maintain certain activity level due to whatever reasons, it would be fair of them to willingly step down and let someone else take over, someone who has the time and will.

My whole Discord server and my forum at the moment. There's only myself and a friend who moderate the forum as it's not busy. My Discord has a few other mods but none are active usually. I've dealt with it in the past as an Admin and even as a mod. I understand life gets in the way, or interest gets lost. I'd prefer to staff give notice, or even PM me about stepping down.

I've demoted inactive staff before. I'll usually give them about 3 months to come back onto the forum and start contributing and if they don't, I demote them. I'm always pleased to bring them back as a staff member if they remain active and loyal, but most of the time when they're gone for extended periods of time, they're gone for certain.

We've had staff go inactive before, it happens. If they disappear for over a month without saying anything to anyone then they'll probably get turned into an elite member. If they come back and can commit to their staff position again, then I'll re-add them to the team.

I always run into that. I usually just let it be, or if it’s been a long time I’ll ask if their still interested in being staff.
