How do you add inflection to your texts or writing?

In other words, how do you express how you want someone to interpret the way your text is meant to be interpreted?

For example, I add "lol" or an emotion to let the person know how I meant for it to be said.

Ex) Nebulous is a big headed hippo :P Obviously joking

Vs

Ex) Nebulous is a big headed hippo  Apparently mad?

Typically I add smilies/emoticons or acronyms like lol, rofl, jk. Still, someone could be being sarcastic and not know despite the additions.

From what I've seen, no matter how you end your sentence, if someone wants to take offence, they'll take offence. I still try to add on the proper acronym or emoticon to emphasize the meaning behind what I'm typing.
