Should governments censor material on the world wide web?

Nope. We should have the freedom to look at what ever we want, but expect the consequences if you look at anything really bad.

I understand why oppressive regimes do it. They don't allow freedom in their countries, and don't want their citizens to know what they are missing.

But, I don't think I agree with it.....

To the extent that, say, China does it, HELL TO THE NAW.

Still, child porn etc being censored is arguably a good thing.

I'm conflicted as to what my final answer should be, really. I wanna say it's never okay to censor, but I also do not wanna come across as a child porn supporter >_>

Yes. Even seemingly innocent search terms can generate results that no parent would want their child to see.

So you're saying, if an adult wants to watch porn etc they can't, just because parents can't be bothered to add a simple filter to they're computer.

Take the recent nailing of australias entire governmental internet presence. A group of international hackers nailed them with *BILLIONS* (nearing trillions now) of TCP requests, effectively DDoS'ing them off the face of the earth. They all went down at once.

They just tried to introduce some questionable censorship acts. Anonymous (the hackers) didn't like this. So they took action.

Bottom line: Child porn/etc should be filtered. Anything else is free and legal.

no because the government's main concern is never its people only itself and its own interests so the last thing I would want is the government decided want to censor outside of obvious illegal stuff like child porn and that sort of thing.

No. I don't bloody agree with censorship

A responsible parent would install a filter.

I don't agree with internet censorship. I think **********************

Not everyone is computer savvy enough to install a filter. And if an adult wants to watch porn, then they can go down to their local video store (depending on how desperate they are).

That can be embarrassing for some. Most people like to do it in the comfort of their own home without having to be embarrassed about renting it.

Besides, most computers and ISP's offer filtering at your request, it's not that hard, lazyness really.

If they didn't watch it at all they may find that they can survive, still.

Why should people have to stop watching it if they are an adult, can make their own choices, so you're basically saying, because parents can't be bothered adding a filter to their childs computer, or monitor their usage, the people who watch porn and stuff like that, can't, and have to pay money when they could get it for free before. Bullshit.

There should be no mandatory filter for adults, they are old enough to make their own decisions, and make they're own choices in life without some bullshit government trying to stop our freedom on the internet.

The thing is, the internet isn't just littered with porn. There is also spam, vicious racists etc. I'm all for light internet censorship, so it's less likely that people will be offended by sexual explicit and offensive content.

P.S: People can't get porn for free. Somebody has to pay for the internet connection.

If you don't want to see those sort of things, don't go on the internet, it's as simple as that. Someone could get racially attacked walking down the street, you can't stop those sort of things, no matter how hard you try.

BTW - Sure, if you want to take it that way, but if you think about it, you are not paying for the internet just so you can look at porn, you use it for other things also, so therefore, technically, you aren't paying for the porn. Becuase, i can go to any library and download porn onto my USB, then i wouldn't be paying for it.

Someone could get racially attacked going down the street, true. However, this is 2010. It is not 1960. Times have changed, and the kind of wordwide freedom of speech on the internet means that it's much more likely to stumble upon these things while browsing on your favourite websites or message boards.

Do you think it's likely to get bombarded by pornographic spam walking down the street?

It's possible, could be walking by a porn store. Besides, if you have a pop-up blocker, you won't get bombarded with spam, most sites are tight on this sort of thing, there's a slim chance you will get porn pop up on your screen, it's not worth censoring the internet over.

It's much more likely to happen on the internet. And who said that these types of ads came up in pop-ups? Let's do a scenario here. I'm a 9 year-old fan of the Don and Murph show on the internet. I like their videos and think that the guys are funny, so I decide to visit their website.

Oh oh! The parents won't be happy.

The thing is, 9 year olds shouldn't be on the internet unattended. They don't allow under 13 year old's join forums or myspace, facebook, msn, why? Becuase people are too young and don't know what is on the internet, any kid who is on the internet under the age of 10 should be watched over by a parent. Besides, most kids now day's know what porn is, it's nothing new.
