Dressed in a jail-issued blue jumpsuit, a woman described by authorities as a Saudi royal princess appeared in an Orange County courtroom Thursday to face human trafficking charges that accuse her of forcing a Kenyan woman to work as a domestic servant.

Meshael Alayban, who stood in a gated section of the courtroom and had her hair pulled straight back, uttered “Yes your honor” several times during the brief appearance in the Santa Ana courtroom. An Arabic-speaking interpreter translated the proceedings for the woman.

Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas made a rare appearance in court to represent the prosecution. The woman's arraignment was continued until July 29.

Alayban was arrested early Wednesday by police at her Irvine home in a gated community where they say she forced the woman to work 16 hours a day, seven days a week, for only $220 a month. She was unable to leave because Alayban kept the woman's passport and documents, police say.

Contrary to recent propaganda, slavery is allowed under Sharia.

The alleged victim came to the U.S. with Alayban and her family in May. Both had temporary visas, Rackauckas said. The alleged victim had previously lived with the family in Saudi Arabia for about one year.
I didn't read anywhere in the article that this woman was forced to come to the U.S. with this family. Surely she knew by living with them for a year what she was in for. I'm not condoning what was done here but I'm asking did you read she was forced to go with them?

I hated reading this article and knowing that they think none of the laws of the US applies to them. They may be in for a rude awakening.

Hence the argument that those who chose to live under Sharia believe they should have a separate court from the rest of us.

Under that legal system, she did nothing wrong.

From 2011 in Michigan

This legislative session isn’t just about the budget; state Rep. Leo Berman has won House approval of a proposal that would prohibit courts from making legal decisions based on foreign laws, such as Shariah, the religious law of Islam.

On May 9, House members attached Berman’s legislation as an amendment to House Bill 274, a tort reform measure that Gov. Rick Perry earlier declared emergency legislation, before sending the overall proposal to the Senate.

But Berman, R-Tyler, drew our attention April 4 when he told the House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence that Shariah law is "being done in Dearborn, Mich," adding:"The judges in Dearborn are using, and allowing to be used, Shariah law. Also in England... in France and in Germany, the use of Shariah law is being allowed as well."

The Gentleman's statement may or may not be based in objective fact, but the fact that the perception is so widespread is worth noting under the general heading of "where there is smoke...".
