Is Honesty Always the Best Policy?

We’ve heard it since we were young, “honesty is the best policy.” But how much weight does it carry? Are all lies bad, or is it necessary to tell a little white lie here and there?
 
The truth often hurts, by even evasiveness, white lies, or "not the entire truth" can be harmful and/or hurtful.
I have been in many situations where someone answers, and I walk away, but then my mind thinks "wait, they didn't actually answer the question I asked". At which point my overthinking mind goes in so many directions and I end up in possibly a worse state than if they had just given me the hard truth.
 
…being truthful is one of the most important things, I think….because it’s what trust is built on and we learn that as one of the very first things as children…if an adult lies to us then the trust in them is broken…so honesty is important but I wouldn’t necessarily reveal ‘information/facts’ to someone that I knew would hurt them, if I didn’t feel that it was necessary for them to know…if there was no value in disclosing other than to cause distress…
 
Depends on the situation and repercussions.

Pregnant wife asking husband if she looks like a fat cow? Hell no, honey! You're glowing!

Fucked up at work and created a mess? Yeah, you should probably fess up.
That is one great example there:LOL: ... that's exactly what i think
 
As a person who is considered the blunt honest one in his friend group(well one of them).. yes I believe honesty is the best policy. Sometimes people just need to hear the truth and face it .
