Is math a science or a belief?

Figure It Out What GIF by CBC

It's a science. I put my faith in it because it's accurate, repeatable, and logical. But it's a science, the core of understanding the universe is mathematics because everything can be described in math... in a way it's more of a language.

"Figures don't lie; but, liars figure." .... Mark Twain

“Figures don’t lie, but liars figure” is a play on words used to make a point.

Figures, the noun, refers to numbers. Figure, the verb, refers to calculating, doing mathematics.

The point of the saying is that you can start with accurate data (“figures don’t lie”), but the data can be manipulated by someone knowledgeable and unscrupulous (“liars can do the figuring”).

For example, I heard about someone touting a stock they wanted people to buy: “It has the highest price-to-earnings ratio in the industry!” As if that is a good thing.

Or if you want to say a particular number is large: “If you laid them end to end, they would stretch from A to B!” where A and B are places far apart. But if you want to make the same number appear small: “They would all fit in a box only X inches [or centimeters] on a side.” Which one is more honest? Probably neither one. Give an example that actually helps the reader understand the implications of the number. Maybe something like “this is nine percent more than last year.” .... Joe Devney
