Is America in denial about the extent of its financial problems, and therefore incapable of dealing with the gravest crisis the country has ever faced?

This is a story of debt, delusion and - potentially - disaster. For America and, if you happen to think that American influence is broadly a good thing, for the world.

The debt and the delusion are both all-American: $14 trillion (£8.75tn) of debt has been amassed and there is no cogent plan to reduce it.

Well... everyone's in denial.

The rich countries are so heavily indebted they wouldn't be rich if they were to pay it all

Though, admittedly a lot of that money would probably just go to other rich countries...

Hmm, I wonder how far you could go in repaying all that simply by circulating...

Some of us have been saying we're up the debt creek for years now.

We're labeled haters and told we're not progressive and that we're in bed with big business and that Those Inside The Beltway know better and we can spend borrowed money on shovel ready projects with a recovery act and the economy will turn itself around.

Then the politicians smile and joke and say Oh, sorry.

Oh, sorry?

And now you want to do another stimulus?

My God Man.

When is enough, enough?
