They weren't paying attention to the fact that the Maya started their day at sunrise.
Sunrise in Belize City is at 06:18 CST today. (that is more or less in the middle of the Mayan Empire)
That would be 7:18 Eastern in the US.

Looked like the end was coming when I woke up this morning. Pitch black outside, pouring rain so hard I couldn't see out the windows and 55 MPH winds. Then I knew it couldn't be the end because my power never went out.
