An increasing number of Britons now buy their own gifts to ensure that they get what they want, a survey suggests.

The average amount spent on selfgifting has risen to nearly £280 a year. At the same time, nearly one in four people expects to spend less on gifts for their family in the coming year. Nearly one in two people has bought their own gifts for a special occasion, while one in 10 always buys their own gifts.

The research, commissioned by Barclaycard, revealed that six in 10 Britons still believe it is the thought that counts when it comes to gifts, but one in six would rather have chosen their gifts themselves. Nearly one in four (23 per cent) does not trust their family and friends to get the right presents, so believes self–gifting is the most sensible way to get what they want.

The most popular self–gifts include clothing and shoes, TVs and music equipment, alcohol and tobacco, recreation and cultural items and restaurants and hotels.

Would you prefer to buy your own gifts? Why or why not.

I always ask that if someone wants to send me a gift then to send either money or vouchers. Otherwise I end up with all manor of stuff that I never use or re-use as gifts to other people.

I just take whatever the gift is as I too believe it's the thought that counts. If I cannot use it or don't want it, I bring it over to the local nursing home. The nursing home then runs a raffle for any senior who might want the gift. It's fun and at least I know someone will enjoy something that I didn't.
