For two young men named Jackie and David,
Living life reviled and hated,
Each living a young life rife with strife –
Constant jeers, constant fears,
Disowned by family and peers,
They faced constant spite,
See Jackie was black, and David was white,
They were also closer than brothers, call them lovers,
Outside closed doors, on the street, holding hands,
Outside closed doors, onto public stands, harsh lands,
They thrust themselves into the barbs and stings,
Well aware of the trouble that their love could bring,
Unaware that their worst nightmares would only soon begin...
As they passed the local grocery store, they drew the usual stares,
Parents held their kids closer as they passed the unusual pair.
Every block they traveled was a new cacophony,
Of verbal abuse, from teasing to mocking,
David tried to ignore their insults and trash talking,
The couple didn’t look their direction and just kept walking.
The tension was so palpable you could cut it, until it finally erupted,
The relative peace, disrupted,
And eventually eroded,
And in time the volatile crowd finally exploded,
Infuriated, the mob ran after the men and made quick pace.
They grabbed Jackie and smacked him in the face.
Throwing him to the ground, they spat on his coat,
Slamming him on his spine and holding him by the throat,
Jackie cried and wailed,
For his boyfriend to run… but to no avail
With the mob close on his tail,
The crowd tore up Jackie and dashed for the other.
Throwing his bags in the gutter, the mob mashed the other.
David ran only a single block –
Before one man caught him a headlock,
The crowd behind them cheered,
Taking shots to strike as David looked up and stared –
Praying, as he started to sob,
Calling to the sober, rainy skies for God,
But seeing only the mass mob…
As David lay motionless and bleeding from the beating,
Jackie got up, barely breathing, and began pleading,
But someone kneed him.
He wanted to look for his friend but the blows kept him down.
They didn’t stop and kept throwing him around.
A bottle cracked across the boy’s temple as he lay on the ground.
All of a sudden someone in the mob pulled a pistol and shot –
Twice in the neck, once in the skull, the boy dropped,
The mob walked away leaving the bodies draped along the street pews.
Leaving them bloody and bruised –
They even took their shoes.
Only in death were they together in peace –
Unabashed, unafraid, and at ease,
Jackie and David buried side by side,
Unaware the nightmare would end soon,
On that rainy afternoon,
Where only the heavens cried…
