Is it a bird? Or is it a ... mule?

Colombian authorities say they have captured a pigeon that was being used to smuggle drugs into a prison.

Guards became suspicious after spotting a bird with a package on its back near the prison in Bucaramanga, in the north of the country, The Telegraph reported.

The bird was carrying 1.6 ounces of marijuana, along with 0.2 ounces of crack cocaine.

This is a new case of criminal ingenuity, said Gen. Jose Angel Mendoza, commander of Bucaramanga Metropolitan Police.

The bird had been trained to deliver the narcotics.

Unfortunately, the prisoners' greed got the better of them: The bird was too weighed down to fly into the prison and deliver the contraband.

Due to the excess weight it was impossible for the bird to accomplish the objective and it ended up being caught by the police, Mendoza said, according to Sky News.

In the past, prisoners have used pigeons to smuggle in mobile phone SIM cards.
