The creator of the Kick-Ass comic books said Jim Carrey did the makers of the film "the biggest PR favour of all time" by choosing not to promote the sequel.

Mark Millar said the Kick-Ass 2 star inadvertently provided millions of dollars worth of publicity after declaring in June he would not promote the film due to its violence.

Carrey, who stars as vigilante Colonel Stars And Stripes in the film, voiced his concerns on Twitter, saying the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School had changed his perspective.

Millar said: "In a weird way, Jim Carrey did us the biggest PR favour of all time.

"Universal estimate that it's about $30m (£19m) worth of publicity that we got out of him pulling out of the publicity.

"I'm going to pull out of my next movie," he joked.

Millar attended a charity screening of the film in Glasgow, describing the movie as "bigger and better" than its predecessor.

"This is the Empire Strikes Back to our Star Wars," he said.

The screening raised cash through ticket sales for charities based in Coatbridge, outside Glasgow, where the writer grew up.

"There's something lovely about seeing the film in Glasgow because, growing up in Coatbridge, Hollywood seemed so far away," he said.

"So to bring it closer to home like this really feels quite special."

Carrey has long been a vocal advocate of stricter gun controls in America.

Twenty pupils and six staff were killed at Sandy Hook in Connecticut last December by 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza.

Well, that sure backfired on Carey. If he's this adamant about not promoting the violence, I'm wondering why he even wanted to be associated with this movie. Guess, the money was good.

Are you going to see Kick-Ass 2?

I don't think that it really backfired on Jim Carey, who said that he wasn't actually ashamed of the film, but felt that recent events such as Sandy Hook have swayed him in a different perspective about the movie. He doesn't want to voice support for the violence, but he never had a problem with the movie's success. Now, the fact that he has a problem with the movie is hilarious when you consider that he has a career off talking from his ass and acting like a moron, but what's even more hilarious is that he'd go the entire movie without having a problem with all its violence, and then decide afterward he doesn't want to help it. He's an asshole, it's as simple as that, you have a problem with guns? Don't fucking sign-off to be in a movie called "Kick-Ass" and expect it to be flowers and butterflies. This just makes you a douche-bag because you don't even have the respect to standby a company that paid you money to be in their movie.

I don't even get why he's only now saying things when the Sandy Hook shootings happened nearly a year ago.
