Jodi Arias has said she would prefer the death penalty to a long prison sentence, after being convicted by a jury in Arizona of murdering her ex-boyfriend.

The 32-year-old had hoped to convince the eight men and four women on the panel that she killed T Alexander in self-defence in June 2008.

But her gamble did not pay off. Jurors are due back in court on Thursday to begin the sentencing phase of the trial.

In a courtroom interview with local TV station KSAZ, Arias herself said she would "prefer to die sooner than later".

"Longevity runs in my family, and I don't want to spend the rest of my natural life in one place," she said.

"I believe death is the ultimate freedom and I'd rather have my freedom as soon as I can get it."

The case elevated Arias to a household name, with a real-life story of sex, betrayal and murder.

It quickly became a media sensation, with a seat in the public gallery changing hands for $200 (£128) on one occasion.

Explicit photographs and recordings, along with graphic testimony fuelled the public's demand.

The court heard how Arias shot T Alexander in the forehead, stabbed him nearly 30 times and slit his throat from ear to ear.

Friends discovered his body crumpled in his shower about five days later.

She claimed he had attacked her and she fought for her life.

But prosecutors said she killed him in a jealous rage after he said he wanted to end their affair and date other women.

Arias fought back tears as the verdict was announced on Wednesday, while her ex-boyfriend's family wept and hugged each other.

Outside, a huge crowd that had gathered on the Phoenix courthouse steps screamed, whistled and cheered at the news.

The victim's friend Chris Hughes said he was happy with the verdict, pointing out a bold proclamation that Arias made in one of her jailhouse interviews that she would not be found guilty.

"She said, 'No jury would convict me. Mark my words'. This jury convicted her," Mr Hughes said. "Luckily we had 12 smart jurors. They nailed it."

When asked about Mr Alexander's family, Arias told KSAZ: "I just hope that now that a verdict has been rendered, that they'll be able to find peace."

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has said no more media interviews with Arias would be granted. She has been placed on suicide watch.

I say let her rot in jail and I hope she lives to be 100 years old!

She put her self in that situation.

How about NOT killing your boyfriend instead Jodi? Did you think you'd kill him and go on to lead a normal life afterwords?

She probably thought she could as that's what most of those type think when they plan these things out but as you can see here well it didn't work out that well.

She might just be saying she wants death to make it seem like less of a punishment so they would give her life instead so she is punished for it when in reality she really wanted life all along. She's already committed murder so why not throw a lie on top for good measure?
