How did you learn to drive a car? Who taught you, and how many lessons did you need?

I took driver's ed with an automatic and had no problem. But I learned to drive a stick shift from an old boyfriend. Sad story. I stripped his gears and he told me to get in the passenger seat, where you belong. A short lived romance - he had a temper.

I learned how to drive in a stick shift / manual car. It made learning to drive about 100 times harder. But, I am glad that I know how to drive a manual.

I was driving equipment and trucks before I was able to take driver's ed. They didn't care if you'd been driving or not, if you were in school, and in the 15 - 16 age range, you took driver's ed.

The instructor didn't think it was funny when I asked about double clutching to engage the PTO while moving.

That was... let me see.... while Gerald Ford was president.

(some of the 'kids' just said who?)

I learned to drive on a Mazda RX-7. It was a manual and it belonged to my son's Dad. He taught me to drive, although my Dad will argue all day long that HE taught me how to drive.

It was cool learning on a stick, and I prefer driving a manual to an automatic any day. I learned about 24 years ago. Holy shit; I've been driving longer than most of you have been alive....

That's a reassuring thought,

I've had a driver lesson person to teach me how to drive. Either than that my mom and my dad helped me.

I'm an okay driver I mean I know I'm not the best and I'm definitely not the worst either.

My dad mostly taught me how to drive. I learnt in a manual.

My dad taught me how to drive. I started off in an empty church parking lot, just to get the feel of driving a car. Then, I drove around the neighborhood for a while, and then I hit the real road and continued from there. I also took Driver's Ed at school, but that was after I had already been driving with my parents for a while. I successfully passed the course and took my driver's license test with the instructor, and luckily for me, I passed it!

Actually, I have the post where I stated I got my license:

Since then, I've got a truck and drive wherever I want to go. It's nice not having to ask mommy or daddy to take me anywhere anymore.

PS - don't learn how to drive a stick shift while going up a hill onto a highway. lol

I have a permit at the moment. I don't drive very often though, so still learning

.

I had lessons from 31st August (My birthday) to beginning of April (I passed on the 14th) I had 1 2 hour lesson every fortnight. I took the lessons in a BMW mini. In between the lessons my dad took my out when he could be bothered. Sometimes I really had to nag at him. That was in my 1988 Mini Mayfair, My first car and the one I still own

I passed my theory the second time round (Hazard perception got me the first time) and I passed the test the first time round. On my first ever lesson the instructor told my mum I was a natural driver. The guy after the test told me the same

I can start learning to drive when I turn 16, and I will probably learn in a manual. If you have a manual license you can drive automatic as well, but it doesn't work the other way around. It's probably better that I know how to drive a manual.
