At what age is a good time to leave kids home alone...for an hour? For the day?

According to Child Protective Services, 12 is the legal age in most states that you can leave your kids home alone.

My daughter is 13 and my son is 11. The most I've ever done is an hour and that's it. I won't let them stay home all day without an adult present (me or my wife)

As far as I could remember, my parents allowed us to be alone at home when we reached high school. We were trained as early as in primary school.

When they become adults? In India, normally, we don't leave kids alone at home.
