Dear Delanie, November 17, 1955

I don’t think I have been this paralyzed in my life before; visualizing the rounds shooting overhead as I grasp my helmet to keep alive. Peeking over my protective tombstone, I have to take in what I am actually seeing. While I am trying to clench my helmet on my head—the only thing keeping me alive—I see bodies; hundreds of bodies fly in the air as if they had wings and were meant to fly. I see a faint figure pointing something at my face as I am trying to focus because I became disorientated because of shell shock. When I actually return to being able to see, I notice what it was; it was a blade, a blade from a bayonet. I froze. I was hopeful that I was dreaming, little did I know, it was a nightmare come true. I noticed a unclear figure behind the masked man, he was there to save me—finally I was safe! When I came to myself again, I stood my ground and—on point—went full force into no-mans-land where I was going to die for sure. I stood alone. Finally, all was done. All stood at a stand-still, and after the dust settled, we were victorious. Delanie, if you are reading this right now, it’s because I have been drafted into war and I did not want to cause uproar in your life, so I left my story untold until now. Honey, after all I have been through, I am coming home—in one piece—to you in a week. I have been though everything, I thought it was a dream, but even dreams can go astray, and when they do, it takes heroism to conquer even the toughest of feats. I was scared to go—for just reasons—but I have learned a lot about myself, and I wanted you to know that I love you and can’t wait to see you!

With all of my love,
