A 24 year old Perth woman facing death unless she receives a liver transplant is flying to Singapore today to prepare for the operation.

Claire Murray is a former drug addict who has been refused a place on a waiting list for a second liver transplant after she received a donor organ last year before relapsing into drug addiction.

Members of her family are flying to Singapore today to be tested to see if they are suitable for a live liver transplant.

A spokesman for the family says the outcome of those assessments should be known by early next week.

The WA Government has offered the family a $258,000 interest free loan to help pay for the procedure.

My goodness, this pisses me off. She already had her second chance at life, and now she's being given a third. I know it sounds so mean and cynical, but I think that she doesn't deserve the liver transplant. She needs to learn - tough love.

Opinions?

The key word in this article was live liver transplant. If none of the family members meet the Liver Donor criteria it's simply not going to happen.

The criteria for a liver donation include:

Being in good health

Having a blood type that matches or is compatible with the recipient's

Having a charitable desire of donation without financial motivation

Being between 18 and 60 years old

Being of similar or bigger size than the recipient

Before one becomes a living donor, the donor has to undergo testing to ensure that the individual is physically fit. Sometimes CT scans or MRI are done to image the liver. In most cases, the work up is done in 2-3 weeks

Liver transplantation is potentially applicable to any acute or chronic condition resulting in irreversible liver dysfunction, provided that the recipient does not have other conditions that will preclude a successful transplant. Metastatic cancer outside liver, active drug or alcohol abuse and active septic infections are absolute contraindications. While infection with HIV was once considered an absolute contraindication, this has been changing recently. Advanced age and serious heart, pulmonary or other disease may also prevent transplantation (relative contraindications). Most liver transplants are performed for chronic liver diseases that lead to irreversible scarring of the liver, or cirrhosis of the liver.

IMO, she had her second chance at life and decided doing drugs was more important than the second chance given to her. She has absolute contraindications why she doesn't deserve another chance.

The person isn't famous by any means before this. I don't know why they are giving a person a third chance when they didn't seem to care about their second one or their first chance either. There are plenty of people who are given a shitty hand in life by being born with a body that's sick from the get go but here is someone who had a healthy body that they willingly abused with drugs. I don't blame anyone that denied her a spot on a difficult to get on list when there is far more people who deserve a second chance that might not get it because she took it from them.
