I was just on a couple forums and saw one with an add-on/plug-in installed that automatically locked all threads that haven't received a reply in 3 months. Another forum locked all threads that weren't posted this year (threads made in 2022 and below were all locked).

What do you think of this? Should all old threads be locked? Should they stay open forever?

Well I can't speak for anyone else but I haven't been around too long so when I look back on old posts, before my time, I enjoy replying to them because they are interesting and again I wasn't around when they were made. I think the locked threads is kind of annoying. They do this on a couple of other sites I'm on but you know if someone makes a journal thread, takes a hiatus, comes back their stuff is locked. You can ask a moderator to open up but it's still a bit annoying.

I think old threads, depending on what they are, should stay open so long as it's something relevant and not a back and forth thread of arguments between members. Seen quite a bit of those elsewhere.

Yes, dittoes; old threads should NOT be locked. I also just enjoy 'the read' on a lot of them.

So you're the one doing it.

cool, keep it up

Every forum I frequented 15 years ago had a policy against necro posts and many would lock old threads and I never saw a reason given for it. Now the only conceivable reason I can think of is for topics where information can change relatively quickly, such as healthcare and technology, retiring old threads is probably good housekeeping to keep the focus on the most recent and relevant information. That doesn’t apply to most forum discussion though.

I’ve been enjoying seeing revived old posts around here.

I'm not extremely fussed so long as it still adds value to the thread and not just for the purpose of upping a post count.

Nope... I'm fine with them being revived if anyone's got something new or relevant to say.

There are a few exceptions: for example, I don't want people gravedigging someone's introduction if they joined a few months ago, or their Ask Me thread if they last logged on a year ago - but in general, I'm happy for old threads to stay open (and be posted in).

I don't have any issues with it. Forums are for posting and making conversation.
