LONDON -A scene straight from My Fair Lady played out at a posh London hotel Saturday as a dozen girls in frilly dresses attended a princess boot camp ahead of this month's royal wedding.
The pint-size wannabe princesses learned how to walk straight, eat with decorum and curtsy. Never mind that it's doubtful any of them will come within spitting distance of the royals at the April 29 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
But if they did, they wouldn't spit.
Jerramy Fine, the American founder of Princess Prep, says she wanted to offer the free one-day tutorial as a preview for her summer camp. The crash course in decorum ââ¬â walking with books on one's head and learning the graceful art of being polite ââ¬â was reminiscent of how Audrey Hepburn shed her working-class Cockney accent and manners in the 1964 film classic.
I love dressing up, said Olivia Watt, a British 7-year-old. It's really, really fun!
Wearing a Jackie O-style suit, complete with pearls and perfectly curled hair, Fine taught 12 British and American girls dressed in their best party frocks to curtsy in front of a fake Queen and a cut-out of William and Kate. Once they mastered the art of bobbing up and down gracefully, they set off to learn how to take tea.
One must remember to stir the tea before eating, Fine instructed.
Take your spoon and stir from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock, she said. I don't want to hear any spoons clanking.
Next was an intimidating pile of crustless finger food.
Try to not get any crumbs on your mouth, Fine advised.
The course will be followed by three weeklong summer camps in London for 8- to 11-year-old girls. Costing more than $4,000, the camps teach girls about modern and historic princesses, royal history, phone etiquette, how to take compliments and how to curtsy. The girls also volunteer at charities ââ¬â all while being waited on by a butler called 'Jeeves.'
