How Do You Avoid Losing Sight of Your Personal Goals and Identity?

Maintaining a sense of identity is important, but throughout life we might lose sight of ourselves. Whether in a relationship, due to a job, or by trying to impress someone, we stand the chance of losing sight of who we really are.

I am not entirely sure how to respond to this, on one hand my initial reaction was that my personal goals are so central to who I am as a person. My identity has changed and will continue to change throughout my life as I come across new perspectives and experiences. My core principles and desires have been somewhat stable in terms of both my day to day living and my lifelong aspirations. Although as I have changed as a person they have also managed to change in some ways. I do wonder though if I have been putting them off and not fully pursuing them.

My personal goals have been slipping further and further away. I haven't lost sight of them or lost the desire to attain them, but it is difficult to pretend they are still goals. I put in a lot of effort but the discouragement is marring my identity and even the interest in maintaining an identity.

I try to stay focused by keeping my goals close, even if it is just an image or some words in front of me.

"losing sight of who I really am?"

I AM an OLD, Half-Crippled, Half-Drunken, Ex-Sportswriter.

Losing sight of who, and what, I Really Am, may, in fact, be a good thing.

As for goals. I don't even know if I ever had any.

..... beyond wanting to be the first half-Jewish Non-Catholic Pope.

I don't really have any goals. I already have a great partner, a kid (who is an adult now), a decent job, own a house, have a nice car. What more can I really ask for?

One perpetual goal I have is to get into better shape and stop slipping into bad eating habits.

My goals are to find a better job, be a good person and get myself sorted out mentally. Failing on all three counts, but still going.

Do I lose sight of my identity? Sure, who doesn't these days? We all get swamped, get mixed up in things we don't want to get mixed up in, or make decisions we regret. It's very easy to lose sight of yourself pursuing other things.

aka overthinking things....

You are always you!

I lost sight of who I was in my first marriage. My ex wife emasculated to me the point where I became this weak, 3 ft tall, pushover of a person that I had to break free from being during my divorce. I had to spend a lot of alone time having to get re-acquainted with myself and having to get my head straight.

I can't picture you as a pushover, you're a strong, level-headed person!

I've been very vulnerable in many of my relationships before which hasn't done me any favors.
