Barcelona have agreed a fee to buy banned striker Luis Suarez from Liverpool, the Premier League side have announced.

Suarez, whose four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup was upheld by Fifa on Thursday, is rumoured to be costing the Catalan club about £75m.

A statement on the Liverpool website read: "Liverpool FC confirms that Luis Suarez will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona. The player now has permission to complete the usual formalities, which will then conclude the transfer.

"We would like to thank Luis for his contribution and the role he played in helping bring Champions League football back to Anfield.

"Everyone at Liverpool Football Club wishes Luis and his family well for the future."

Suarez was the top goalscorer and assist maker in English football last season, but his time on Merseyside was clouded by a bite on Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic and an eight-match suspension following racist remarks towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra in 2011.

The 27-year-old had previously been banned in the Netherlands for leaving his teeth marks on an opponent.

Although the transfer is not yet complete, the Spanish club posted a picture of their summer purchase wearing a Barcelona shirt on Twitter.

They confirmed he would "travel to Barcelona next week for a medical, sign a contract for the next five seasons and be presented as an FC Barcelona player".

It was not clear where he would be unveiled by the Catalan giants as his ban prevents him from entering the stadium or training ground of any team.

Suarez has said he is leaving Liverpool with a "heavy heart".

"Both me and my family have fallen in love with this club and with the city," he said.

"But most of all I have fallen in love with the incredible fans. You have always supported me and we, as a family, will never forget it, we will always be Liverpool supporters.

"I hope you can all understand why I have made this decision. This club did all they could to get me to stay, but playing and living in Spain, where my wife's family live, is a lifelong dream and ambition. I believe now the timing is right."

If the £75m fee is accurate, Suarez will become the third most expensive footballer of all time after Gareth Bale (£86m) and Ronaldo (£80m).

It is likely to be the biggest transfer of the summer.

Your thoughts?

It keeps surprising me that clubs like Barcelona can afford this kind of money. The money they don't have...

If I'm not mistaking, Barcelona got a punishment (transfer ban) from the FIFA earlier this year. Another fact that shows how corrupt Blatter and his friends are. Money can do strange things.

Also, I don't think Suarez fits the team. He's a great player, but Barcelona plays in a whole different style
