Have you ever made your own soap? Would you?

The basic process of making soap is:

  1. Mix water and lye, set aside to cool
  2. Melt oils, set aside to cool
  3. Blend lye water and oils to form a soap “batter”
  4. Pour into mold and let harden for a day
  5. Turn out of the mold, cut into bars and let cure for 2-3 weeks.

Never really thought about it :ponder:

I suppose it would be fun. But I don't really use bar soap in any situation in my life. I use body wash in the shower. Liquid hand soap in the restrooms.

I don't make my own soap. I do like to make my own things but haven't tried that. There are some things I enjoy making and other things seem easier to just purchase

Not something I've ever done, but I have heard it's not too hard, so I'd be interested to give it a go at some point!

Nah, soap isn't so expensive that I can't buy a reasonably priced one myself.

I believe she is trying out a little bit of everything at the moment, she showed me a peanut butter scented one not long ago.
Thats cool, never heard of peanut butter scented soap before. :|

Pretty easy, just pour liquids into a mold :P

The price isn't the point, people do it just to have a hobby.

While I'm into natural & holistic, soap making wasn't something I cared to try out. Good, organic soaps are easy to come by. Or I'd just buy scented ones at a craft fair. Working with lye is what gets me the most. Although I have found recipes that don't require lye.
What scents have you made?

We used to make our own laundry detergent, but as buckets of random chemicals and stuff piled up and the process never seemed to end, we went back to just buying it.

I make soap balls. You know how a bar of soap will eventually whittle down to just a tiny piece? Well I put the soap pieces into a tin and when there are enough pieces, I put them into a dish. I then place the dish into a microwave to heat it all up and then use a large spoon and shape it into a ball once it starts to cool down.

The soap balls fit real nice under my armpits when I'm in the shower..

Nothing. Just I'm intimidiated by using it as it can be quite caustic.
Oh yeah, I'll bet it is.

What did you make it out of?

Thats a pretty good idea. I suppose if you ran out of small soap pieces and wanted to make a new ball you could just cut up a new bar of soap and microwave that.
