Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Master of the Queen's Music, says the national anthem is 'very boring'.
In comments which some may regard as tantamount to treason, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Master of the Queenââ¬â¢s Music, wonders if it is time to dispense with the ââ¬Åvery boringââ¬Â national anthem and replace it with ââ¬Åsomething a bit more stirring.ââ¬Â
ââ¬ÅGod Save the Queen has always struck me as having a very flat tune, and, indeed, it normally comes out sounding like one long 'derrrrrrrrrrrrââ¬â¢,ââ¬Â says Sir Peter, a former republican who, as a result of his dealings with the Queen, now professes to be a monarchist.
ââ¬ÅThe national anthems of other countries, such as France and Germany, are a lot more impressive and tend to have a more galvanising effect on their peoples. Benjamin Brittenââ¬â¢s arrangement of our anthem was probably the best there has ever been, but he didnââ¬â¢t honestly have a lot to work with.
ââ¬ÅIt would be a lovely idea to start from scratch and come up with a whole new anthem. I donââ¬â¢t know if I am the one to write it, but itââ¬â¢s a thought.ââ¬Â
Lewis Hamilton will doubtless be hoping that, if Sir Peter, or anyone else, is commissioned to write a new anthem, he will make it considerably longer than the present one. The Daily Telegraph reported how the McLaren Formula 1 star had wished, as the national anthem was played following his victory at the German Grand Prix over the weekend, that it was a longer piece of music so he could have had more time to savour the moment.

Do you also think it's boring?
