I have both styles in the drawer. I wear the first ones I take out. I don't care which. Both are more or less equally functional.
If I am buying new, what's on sale is the first consideration.

There's room around the crotch and doesn't hug the thighs so there's more room to breathe. Boxers bunch up bad if you don't fold them, if you just bundle them into a ball and throw them in your dresser. And I hate tight skinny jeans. Never understood why guys wear them.
