Metal band Metallica has been confirmed as the final headliners of music festival Glastonbury, ending months of speculation.
It will be the first time the veteran US band has ever played at Glastonbury and the first time a heavy metal band has ever headlined the event.
In a statement on its website, the band said: "We've made no secret that there was still one live music festival on our wish list that has eluded us ... until now!
"It is with a great deal of pride that we announce that we have been tapped to headline the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival on Saturday, June 28th!
"There is such a vibe at Glastonbury and it's maybe the most quintessentially English festival, so when we finally got that call to visit Worthy Farm, we just had to reply with a resounding 'YES!'"
Metallica will be joined on the Pyramid Stage by previously announced headliners Arcade Fire, who play on the Friday, and Kasabian, who close the show on Sunday night.
The confirmation of dozens of new acts just over a month ago prompted a frenzy of speculation over who the final headliner would be.
Daft Punk, Oasis, Prince, David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac were all named as possibilities.
But with acts due to play on more than 100 stages, festival-goers won't be low on choice.
Other confirmed acts include Dolly Parton, Elbow, Lily Allen, Ed Sheeran, The Black Keys, Massive Attack and Bryan Ferry.
An estimated 135,000 people are expected at the event in Somerset on 27-29 June.
