I HATE it when the phone rings at "Oh, Dark, Thirty".

Most of the time it isn't good.

When I was working, it meant that something rated along the lines of "oh, my god" had happened and I had to go in.

Lately, it meant either a serious illness for a family member, or most recently, the unexpected death of a 21 year old.

Today's was, for a change, good news.

Coming to you live from the delivery room. Melissa Maria coming in at 6lb 11oz and 20" born at 615 am on April 11, 2015.

What is your first thought when the "Damned Infernal THING" rings in the 'wee small hours'?

Oh WOW congratulation now that is a great late night call to get

Melissa Maria is beautiful and congratulations on your new granddaughter.

Most of the middle of the night phone calls I get are from my drunk mom, but congrats on this one. Enjoy it.

I think it's my boyfriend trying to get a late nite chat lol but that grandchild news is the greatest and happiest! Congratulations so much!

Ditto. Is this your first grandchild/granddaughter...or are you an old pro at this, now?

What a beautiful family. Congrats, again.

OT: Same as you, OP...it either meant something God-awful had occurred at work or something God-awful had happened to my child. Now that my *child* is 31-years-old, whenEVER my 'emergency' phone rings (including in the middle of the night), I let it go to voicemail, first. I then listen to what the caller believes is a middle-of-the-night emergency and respond accordingly.

Or, DON'T respond...accordingly. More often than not, it's the latter.

Thank you all.

"Muffin" as we have decided to call her, is number.... ahhh... Let's see. Grandkids, step-grandkids, step-grand-kids-in-law, and so on... number... Six. Seven.... something like that.

One of the worst 'non-mortality related' middle of the night phone calls I ever got was in Nineteen Eighty Something.... from my roommate at the time. He said he was in jail and they'd let him go on bail if he got a ride home.

The down side was, he didn't say WHICH jail he was in. I spent three hours driving around checking the city lockup, the next town over, and so on.

Turns out he wasn't sure where he was at the time.

The next morning, the cops called back and I went and picked him up, thirty miles away.
