A tale of two peas in the same pod, together nestled,
Jenna and Ashley, best friends, sister souls in different vessels.
Time changes all things, in high school,
when Ashley expanded her friend pool.
She wanted to belong, she longed for the popularity,
she yearned for a life she never had.
And so she estranged her “soul sister” to chase the latest fads.
Under all the peer pressure, she had a lot to prove and little to lose.
She looked for beauty in designer shoes.
She looked for security in what she wore. Frequented stores –
Window-shopping for things she couldn't afford.
Because no matter how much cash she saved, she was always a day late and a dollar short.
Her new so-called friends had her rotating her wardrobe. The new group had consumed her – doomed her…
To a life of low self-esteem and isolation, she was trapped within. Ashamed, afraid,
and uncomfortable in a shell of her own skin.
Trust was thin. It didn't bother her, as long as she could fit in.

They say that the wrong herd can trample you.
Dreams can deceive, and your possessions can handle you.
With rumors come ridicule, and Ashley had nowhere to run to.
Left alone with the insults and with every relationship severed,
She was more alone than ever.
With her world crashing down on her, she forced her shaky hands to write a suicide letter.
She struck her face with her fists, and then ran to bathroom to cut open her wrists.
On the way, she ran to Jenna with tears in her eyes, her faced covered in mascara stains.
Jenna cuddled her with open arms as if she wanted to take on all of Ashley’s pain.
But then Jenna led Ashley past the bathroom stall,
placing her in front of the mirror hanging on the wall. She asks her what she sees.
Ashley crumbled to her knees, as a disheveled, pitiable young woman greeted her gaze.
She couldn't even recognize herself. She wanted a release from the maze.
She cradled herself in Jenna’s strong arms as her body went numb.
Stripped of the makeup, fake friends, and material crumbs –
she saw, for the first time, what she had truly become.

What she would do to belong to a clique… the hollow hole in her heart ripped thick.

Mirror, Mirror.
