What modern day tactics do you use or know of for advertising and increasing the SEO of your or another website?

Social media

I normally use social media to advertise. That's normally what I use. Twitter is my favorite one to use.

I am yet to find a winning formula. I am going to use Twitter and Facebook for an upcoming project, though!

I've not dabbled too much with Facebook or Twitter just yet - I do have a page for my site on the former, But outside of a couple of posts I made when I first made it, it pretty much just "exists".
I think @Nerdface tried Facebook advertising and it didn't go too well for him, so I'm a bit reluctant to try it. I'm not sure how big of a market for forums there is on Facebook.

not much, because people are rooted to facebook and twitter, got to have some impressions to get them to move to a different site.

+1 on that. Although, I've stayed away from social media for this forum as I don't think it's as effective for general discussion forums. Finding the right places to advertise this forum has been quite difficult.

Online advertising is a minefield these days. There are no cheap or free solutions any more. Anything worth doing unfortunately costs money. :(

Free can still work, but sadly any results do require $$$

Because of the fast developing technology, I do not know how far SEO is relevant in today's scenario.

Not all social media sites help boast your SEO as their links don’t count. However, links from Tumblr can help as their links are counted and crawled. Facebook and Twitter links aren’t followed anymore, but social signals do help a bit with SEO.

It’s best to maximize your efforts by using a script to autopost your content to Twitter, which uses your forum’s RSS feed.

That's good advice. I've promoted my site(s) on Tumblr in the past, but it has been ages. Can't remember the last time I used Tumblr for that matter.
