A young mother has been confined to a wheelchair after using a friend’s make-up brush to cover a pimple.

Jo Gilchrist suffered a staph infection that spread through her body and eventually attacked her spine.

At first she put her back pain down to bad posture, but the pain grew.

She told MailOnline: ‘I was in incredible pain and nothing would work. I honestly thought I was going to die – the pain was worse than childbirth.’

It took doctors in Warwick, Queensland, a long time to realise what had happened to the 27-year-old and she had to be airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

She said: ‘They said (the numbness) would go all the way up my arms and into my chest and when that happened I’d have to be put in an induced coma and learn to breathe again.’

Jo is still fighting the infection that has been put down to the make-up brush and is expecting to stay in hospital for another three months.

‘My friend did have a staph infection on her face and I was using her brush just before,’ she added. I had no idea that could even happen. I used to share with my friends all the time. My best friend feels horrible, but it’s not her fault at all.’

She was told that she may never walk again and will never have control over her bladder or bowel, but she is determined to fight it, if not for herself then for her seven year old son, Tommy.

Shame that this happened. Not sure why she decided to use the make-up brush knowing her friend had a staph infection on her face.

Sounds a bit stupid to use the brush if she knew her friend had the infection.

Agreed but some people don't really think about the risk involved until it's too late.
