A Florida mother has admitted to secretly giving her daughter tapeworms to help her slim before a beauty contest.

Paediatric nurse Maricar Cabral-Osorio says the teenager turned up at her hospital with a bulging stomach.

At first, staff thought she might be pregnant but an ultrasound scan showed no sign of a baby.

"Something was in her intestines," Ms Cabral-Osorio said in an episode of Untold Stories Of The E.R., on the Discovery Fit and Health channel.

The mystery was solved when the patient went to use the toilet and suddenly started screaming.

Ms Cabral-Osorio explained: "It was a toilet bowl full of tapeworms. Blegh! It was so gross and she had pooped all these tapeworms.

"There were a couple that were very long and wiggling around trying to get out of the toilet bowl."

Ms Cabral-Osorio told the patient that since the tapeworms were out of the body, she'd be just fine but one question remained unanswered.

"We were wondering how did she get those tapeworms, and then you saw the mom turn white," she said.

"The mom was apologizing to the girl. It's like 'I'm so sorry. You know, I did it just to make you a little skinnier. You needed some help before we went on to the pageant'."

Ms Cabral-Osorio said the mother denied giving her daughter actual tapeworms, but admitted giving the girl pills containing tapeworm eggs.

OMG! This is so sick and gross! :green:

Do you think charges should have been filed against the mother?

Nothing sadder then someone with their priorities all out of order. Shouldn't the health of their child be more important then some beauty contest that will get quickly forgotten but I doubt this episode will be so quickly forgotten as it should be.

The worst part is she can't even just break down and confess to her actions causing this to happen though I bet her face was enough of a confession in of itself. It's like saying you gave your daughter alcohol but denied making her drunk as if the two aren't related at all.

Not unheard of.

STUPID, Sick, really weird, etc? Yes.

But not unheard of.

Individuals seeking to lose weight are constantly confronted with a variety of diets, supplements, and weight-loss regimens to choose from. Whether in magazines, on television or on the Internet, the consumer can be bombarded with any number of advertisements that claim to offer them the opportunity to lose weight with their products. However, individuals need to be cautious and well-informed when considering what products to use, as certain weight-loss marketing claims are not only misleading but also potentially detrimental to your health. The use of tapeworms for weight-loss purposes illustrates this risk.

Tapeworms are parasitic, segmented ribbon-like worms that obtain nutrients from the digestive system of their host. They can infect many different hosts, including humans, fish, dogs, cows, pigs, and sheep. Tapeworms in humans are usually acquired by eating raw or undercooked meat from infected animals, although humans can also become infected from contaminated water or from eating food prepared and contaminated by infected individuals. Once acquired, the parasite attaches to the intestinal wall of its host and absorbs nutrients as it continues to grow and produce eggs, which can be then be shed in the feces. Certain tapeworms can grow up to 15-30 feet in length and live up to 20 years in the host.
