Do you allow members to change their own name, or do you have a system set up to have them ask for a change?

I have a thread set up for it, along with some rules. While most of my members maintain their registration name, some often change their name simply because they like changing things up.

We have a thread in the feedback section and I think it's pretty standard on most forums to place that thread in that spot.

We have it so other members can refer to the thread and see who did what.

When I had a forum, we just sort of did what other forums usually do and have a simple "Username Change Request Thread" That pretty much took care of it. I never did like the idea of members being able to change their usernames themselves. I could only visualize too much abuse going on. People thinking they can change their name every, oh, two or three weeks or so just because the option to do so is there. Big no-no in my book. I've never heard of people doing this, this was just a vision I had in my head, which is why we had a topic suggestion.

I used to allow members to change their own usernames at my forum, and that's pretty much exactly what happened. Now I have a by request to admin policy for that. I've never denied a change request, but it discourages users from changing their usernames too often.

The part I put in bold is why I always preferred to have a discussion topic requesting name changes. Also, by having a thread, it helps to decifer the difference between choosing a name that's suitable for the forum or something that's not appropriate. So really, a name change thread kind of cuts down on bad choices that could possibly get a person in trouble for using a name that could offend members, especially since on my forums we had people of all ages, so members are required to pick their username with care when registering.

In a thread yeah.

I barely change my username. It was FB92 for so long. I decided to change to my name plus my country.
