Worse still is probably their gross misinterpretation of the holy Quran to fit their own ideals. Most, if not all, the hadith have been misinterpreted to justify various actions and such treatment to women as you've described. In the true context of the holy Quran, men and women are described as different rather than unequal (as all are equal in the eyes of the Lord).
