For those of you outside New Zealand, our government has introduced new “move on” powers that allow police to require homeless people to leave certain business areas if they’re causing disruption or intimidating behaviour.
I support this.
Homelessness is a serious and complex issue, and it absolutely needs long-term solutions. But at the same time, businesses and members of the public have the right to feel safe. I’ve personally been intimidated and harassed for money on multiple occasions, and it shouldn’t be normal to feel uncomfortable just walking into a shop.
This law isn’t about punishing someone simply for being homeless — it’s about addressing behaviour that crosses a line. Public spaces have to work for everyone.
Of course, enforcement alone won’t solve homelessness. Support services, housing access, and mental health support all matter. But ignoring aggressive behaviour isn’t the answer either.
Curious to hear how this is handled in your countries.
