I found this article that's not really a fact but just someone's opinion on what the next Wii U could be in order to be cheaper, you can read it here.
They pretty much say that if the gamepad is taken out the price can drop and it can be replaced by the 3DS if the user has one if they can get the tech to work.
I think it's a reasonable guess but doubt that it would sell well without the gamepad unless it is true that the 3DS could replace it.
