Ran into a forum which won't let you browse unless you disable adblock. It has detoured me so far from posting. I feel like sites in general which do pop ups asking you to disable adblock turns me away more than anything.

Has anyone else ran into a forum or site where you had to disable adblock?

They probably want to get as much as revenue as possible. Some forums put up google ads as much as where it gets disgusting to browse. I would also just close the forum and move on, just like you did.

I run into such sites on regular basis, but I'm using a browser extension that allows me to bypass the blockade. It doesn't work as intended on some sites, though.

Yep, I registered already but likely won't post there at all now.

Problem is that some webmasters treat their forum as a company rather than do it for their pleasure. Don’t get me wrong, if you can make money, go for it. At one point I’d like the same with AdminJunkies. But don’t let it get to your head and at expenses of your quality and members if you know what I mean.

So annoying. I will disable adblock on sites that serve a purpose to me. Forums? Nah. Theres plenty of those. If one of them gives me a reason to be gone, then I'll take it. I feel like I can't keep up with all the forums I've joined since I returned to forums this past June anyway. :P

I disable adblocker on sites I use, but if they're not functional or restrict usage for using adblocker, they lose me.

Yes. I don't join those forums. I don't waste another minute when it starts harassing me to disable everything.

I would definitely leave a forum if it detected my adblocker and I had to disable it to browse the forum. I do turn it off for some websites however. Proboards used to have a popup whenever you used adblocker on any of their forums, but I haven't seen it in a while.

I don't join any sites that require you to disable your ad blocker. I can understand the need to generate revenue to keep a site going, but ads are just generally annoying and can deter you from focusing on the content at hand. I'm all for the right to choose whether you want to view ads or not on websites, as some ads can just be plain invasive.

Whether it's a forum or any other website, if I get a popup bitching at me about adblock I close the tab and go elsewhere. Ads are far too obnoxious, intrusive, and space hogging nowadays to let them display. Browsing Fandom without it is enough to make me bash my head into a wall.

Depends on how good the forum is. I found a thread on a Swedish forum the other day and it was pretty interesting - It had quite a lot of pop ups and ads in b/w posts, but I didn't mind since I liked it a lot. I can't be bothered to disable ads for a website, but I'm much more willing to do to that for forums/communities.

Yeah, still never went back to this forum. It's annoying as hell and just not worth it.

I think that isn't very nice.

I use Google Adsense on my popular blog. I make quite a bit a month from it.

But if I found out someone was using ad block, it wouldn't bother me.

It's your choice what you want to see or not, but of course, it is also the choice of the forum owner to display ads or not just the same.

Thats awesome that you can still make a good chunk of money without annoying your adblock users

If someone is getting money by basically sitting on their butt collecting it for free of course they will plaster as many ads as they want on their forum.
They will just soon realize that no one new is joining and they will eventually start talking to themselves if it's not an established forum.

....and busy forums can make money from offering account upgrades instead of bugging everyone with ads.
