There is yet another ObamaCare surprise waiting for consumers: from now until the next open enrollment at the end of this year, most people will simply not be able to buy any health insurance at all, even outside the exchanges.

"It's all closed down. You cannot buy a policy that is a qualified policy for the purpose of the ACA (the Affordable Care Act) until next year on January 1," says John DiVito, president of Flexbenefit which has 2,500 brokers.

John Goodman of the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas adds, "People are not going to be able to buy individual and family policies, and that's part of ObamaCare. And what makes it so surprising is the whole point of ObamaCare was to encourage people to get insurance, and now the market has been completely closed down for the next seven months."

That means that with few exceptions, tens of millions of people will be locked out of the health insurance market for the rest of this year.

Only about one in four subsidy-eligible people signed up for health insurance," says Robert Laszewski of Health Policy Associates. "That means about 13 million subsidy-eligible people have not yet signed up for health insurance."

Add to that millions more who waited, or thought the policies under ObamaCare were too expensive and decided just to pay the tax penalty.

Appears to me, they have themselves to blame for not signing up when they could have.

What I want to know is that now, if on your policy renewal date in say, June, you get the "we're sorry, but ..." Can you then go get some Obamacare, or are you just out until January through no fault of your own.

I would say, from the article, you'd be out until January:
"If you have a qualifying event, a life qualifying event, which means you get married, you get divorced, you get fired from your job" says Goodman. Or you have a child, or lose a spouse or have a change in income.

"It has to be one of those kinds of events,” he adds. “And if you don’t have that, you're not going to be able to buy insurance."

What!? The only person to blame is a government ignoring everything we were founded on. Freedom of a market for companies to sell a product when and how they please. Freedom of a market for people to buy a product when they need or want it. Nobody can tell me otherwise that none of this is constitutional and our dear leader has blood on his murdering hands for all the people that have died and are going to die from this law. Sorry but that comment makes me so mad!!

I don't know about other hospitals and can only speak for the one where I work. The hospital is under the obligation to treat people whether or not they have medical insurance. The hospital will then set up a payment schedule depending on income. If a person has no income then they take a small percentage of any government subsidy check that person receives.

Sure they will treat colds, broken bones, etc. But they are not going to treat cancer and such diseases.

In most cases, hospitals will treat acute, life threatening situations. But as far as long term ongoing care, no.

I cite the following as a standard of the breed:

Purpose / Statement:
Bayhealth Medical Center is committed to providing Health Care Services to patients in the Kent and Sussex counties and surrounding areas regardless of their ability to pay.
The Financial Assistance program was established to provide financial relief to those who are unable to meet their obligation to Bayhealth Medical Center, regardless of age,
gender, race, social or immigration status, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation.

1. Policy

1.1 Financial assistance applies to charges for traditional, non-elective hospital services to patients that meet the financial criteria set by the Medical Center using the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. The uncompensated care schedule will change whenever the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines are changed which is normally annually. If services are not emergency related, but medically necessary, the Medical Center can seek input from the Physician and/or Utilization Management Director in determining urgency of
the services rendered.

1.2 Charity Care: Uninsured and underinsured patients are eligible to participate in the Medical Center’s charity care program based on their total family income. Patients are prescreened prior to starting the application process and may be deemed ineligible if the patient is eligible for Medicaid or other third party reimbursement or refuses to complete the application process. Charity approvals qualify the patient for a 100% discount on patient responsibility balances. Applications received greater than 90 days from discharge may only be eligible for an 80% discount. Approvals are effective six months from the application receipt date. Patients would need to reapply after the six-month period. A patient’s eligibility is determined by proof of income, family size and assets. Bayhealth requires the following documents to support income: tax return for the most recent year, pay stubs from all sources, bank statements from savings, checking, and investment accounts. Additional information may be required as identified on the application based on an individual’s circumstances. Bayhealth Medical Center reserves the right to check the veracity of the information at their discretion. Migrant workers and the homeless often cannot be reached to complete the Charity application process. Once we confirm the customer is a migrant worker or homeless, the account will be written off as uncompensated care. Documentation to confirm migrant worker status is a letter from the farm documenting the hourly wage, frequency of payment and length of employment.

1.3 Federally Qualified Health Centers: Bayhealth does not participate in the CHAPS program but is committed to serving the Community and will honor the Federally Qualified Health Center’s
