New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

What a joke. This won't solve anything and just be one more intrusive step into our lives that no one asked for or wants. Healthy eating is a choice and as long as you choose to not eat healthy will ensure you stay that way. You can't use the law to force anyone to eat healthy. Oh and since we are at it, where is the rush to ban alcohol and cigarettes if we are so concerned about being healthy?

Not entirely a bad thing, all he did was lower the portions (12 oz is still pretty unhealthy). Large portions were intended to get people to bulk up and save money (more bang for your buck). Obesity has become public policy because of the strain it puts - not only on the individual - but on the economy as a whole. Mayor Bloomberg's methods might seem aggressive, but at least there is someone concerned enough to promote moderation at a time when obesity is so rampant, instead of letting people drive themselves into early graves.

Guess they couldn't come up with an anti-sugar campaign that works.

Of course. Sugar is marketed differently than alcohol or tobacco.

Wait a minute..... banning munchies and soda and then this???

The New York Police Department, the mayor and the city’s top prosecutors on Monday endorsed a proposal to decriminalize the open possession of small amounts of marijuana, giving an unexpected lift to an effort by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to cut down on the number of people arrested as a result of police stops.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, whose Police Department made about 50,000 arrests last year for low-level marijuana possession, said the governor’s proposal “strikes the right balance” in part because it would still allow the police to arrest people who smoke marijuana in public.
