"Following President Obama's annual speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night, a strain of analysis/criticism emerged that cast the president as vengeful and/or angry during the address.

I think EVERY President in my lifetime has done a good job at the WHCD...or, at least, their writers have. They've always carefully balanced the jabs at others (delivered in REsponse) with enough self-deprecating comments. Within this context (of the dinner), it fits; the press and media is who creates and feeds the caricatures of each current POTUS, so its appropriate that this would be the venue by which the POTUS addresses those caricatures - and crams it down the creators' throats.
