Is obesity a disability? Debate & discuss.

I personally believe it is not a disability, because you have control over your actions. (how much you eat)

Only exception would be if it is linked to other medical reasons.

Well if someone gets so obese that they cannot walk or function like a normal person, then they are disabled. Doesnt matter if it was self inflicted or not.

They may be disabled at that point but they should be allowed disability...

At what point do you go I'm getting too big....when you realize that one day you can't wipe your own butt!!! You need to lay off the Twinkies!

People don't just get extremely over weight because they want to.. There is usually all sorts of other factors.. Depression, anxiety, insomnia, a traumatic experience, other health / mental issues.. I doubt anyone who gets so obese they are disabled is that way because they actually planned to get that big just to get some disability money.. There is easier ways to get on disability than that.

Do you feel when they get to this point -- say majorly overweight.. That obesity should be classified as a disability? I mean-- Aren't there many jobs say on the internet that you can do from home, rather than an office setting. Just one example.. But you know what I'm trying to get at.

I have to agree. Unless it is linked to some other medical condition, it should not be classified as a disability.

Yes I do, when they are physically unable to care for themselves, walk, use the rest room, etc etc (self inflicted or not), they are disabled. Not classifying it as a disability would be discriminatory..

The charter has the right to do something discriminatory if it feels it does more good than harm. If it got to the extent where everyone was getting fat to be on disability, or even all overweight people were trying to get disability, we'd have to figure a solution. Where do you draw the line? How do you do about rehabilitation with a disability like this? Fund more money the government doesn't have?

Oh BTW, I agree, I just like to see people's views strong. If people can't walk, or urinate themselves, you have no choice but to classify that as a disability.

People wont get overly fat to where they cant even stand or take care of themseves just to get on disability.. If they are, chances are they have some other issues they need to deal with. Maybe a padded room and cell might be a better place for them. Lol

Extremely obese people are going to die by the time they are 35, and they know that. Most people who are that fat are trying to get better. Its like a disease..
