People using online dating sites are no good at spotting when someone is lying because they want it all to be true, according to researchers.

Lovelorn users are so desperate to believe people who describe themselves as tall, dark and handsome that they fail to notice clues which suggest all is not what it seems, it was claimed.

Although it is harder to spot a liar from something they have written than in a face-to-face meeting, certain signs such as the amount someone refers to themself in the first person should ring alarm bells, researchers said.

The team from the University of Wisconsin and Cornell University in New York analysed the profiles of 78 members of online dating sites and compared them with reality.

They found that many had lied about characteristics like their height, weight and age to make them sound more physically attractive and boost their chances of securing a date.

Profiles which were briefer, contained fewer instances of the first person pronoun I and used less specific language – for example describing themself as not boring rather than exciting – were the most likely to be deceptive.

On average, women were 8.5lb (4kg) heavier than they admitted, while men were 1.5lb (700g) heavier. Half of all users had lied about their height, and one in five about their age, researchers said.

My friend went to meet a guy at a diner that she met on an online dating site. She was afraid to go alone so I agreed to go with her. If all was well, I was supposed to leave. He said he would be waiting outside and would be wearing a red shirt and jeans.

His description of himself on the dating site: 6' tall, black hair, blue eyes, and 175 lbs. Very athletic and good sense of humor.

What we found: An extremely overweight guy (must have weighed at least 300 lbs. - no offense to the big guys), looked to be about 5'7 if that. Very athletic??? This guy looked like he hasn't exercised in years. Black hair??? What was left of it looked pretty dark. Blue eyes??? Never got that close to confirm.

My girlfriend was so angry that we simply drove off. He did text her later asking why she never showed up. She just told him she changed her mind, apologized and asked him nicely never to contact her again. I guess he was so mad at being stood up that she has never heard from him again.

Ive met a couple people from the craigslist personals section. Cant say Ive had a real bad experience.. But then again I haven't done it too many times...

It's hard to meet new people (especially when you work 2pm-10:30pm Mon-Fri & have a kid to take care of on the weekends)...

When you answer a personal ad, you know exactly what the person wants. Cuts down on the guess work & wasted time possibly talking to someone who just wants to be friends.

Have you ever used an online dating site?

Yes.

Yes.

Would you ever want to try an online dating site? Why or why not?

Honestly, I don't know what I was thinking when I tried an online dating site. I never really went in expecting anything. I was mostly just trying to meet other people, get to know them, etc. It seemed like every five seconds or other person who messaged me was trying to get me to go to a porn site. I think I tried it partially because my dad saw some success with it, though one of the women he met wanted him to give up us, his kids, to take care of hers. Let's just say that was the last I heard of her.
