What have you always wanted to know about another race or culture, but never asked because of fear the question would appear ignorant or rude?

I don't understand why Hasidic Jewish women cover their own hair with wigs. I understand that the reasoning is that the hair in and of itself is sexual, but I don't understand how covering it with more hair negates that.

Does anyone know the answer?

I don't know the meaning behind the red dot Indian women place above the bridge of their nose

Why are Asian people overly disciplined and joyless (in general)?

My insight after working with Korean students in a tutoring location is that it is most definitely not that they are joyless.  They are wonderful, funny, bright, but work hard.  Of course, this is only the ones I've worked with, but I can assume they're just like any other cultures in many ways.  However, education is an incredible focus for their culture, and to work hard and make good marks means that you are smart, disciplined, and capable.  It is instilled from a generational and nurturing standpoint as many of my student's parents were born in South Korea and immigrated to the US where they then had their children.

It is essentially the same idea as the bonnet in Amish cultures and the scarf in Islam and similar traditions. They are "covering their hair" for modesty's sake.

The only difference is what they are covering it with.

As an Asian myself, I have to admit, Asian people are worked hard and are expected to have good grades at school. But surely that's not a bad thing. I mean, you want to succeed in life, right? As for the joyless part, I'm not so sure about that. That's the first time I've heard anyone say that Asian people are joyless. Most, if not all, Asians I know LOVE to party and have fun.

I think it's the perception of work your ass off in school and for a job that garners the kind of assumption a lot of Asian people just don't have fun.  This is obviously silly as we're more alike than a lot of people from certain cultures realize.  Heck, many of my Korean students play video games, go on vacation, play sports for fun, etc.  We as human beings tend to see visual differences and rely on stereotypes as opposed to considering the fact that many, if not most, human beings still have thoughts, beliefs, feelings, likes, dislikes, hobbies, goals, dreams, family, friends and whatnot.  Our lives may be different in the way we live them, but many people are quite alike despite ethnicity.
