What should people know before owning a dog for the first time?

Be prepared! Owning a dog is not like owning other pets. While it can be similar, they need more attention than, say, a cat. While a cat usually is okay on it's own more often than not--although you damn well better play with and brush them!--dogs need more than that. They need to be let outside so they can run around and play, and they need to be able to have a place where they can go to the bathroom. They're wonderful pets, but you need to realize that they're a living, breathing creature who deserves love, affection, and care just like a human being does. They can get a bit expensive in terms of food, beds, toys, and veterinarian bills, but they are absolutely wonderful pets if you are committed to caring for them.

That it is not a 'pet' it is a commitment.
You cannot lose interest in it when it is no longer a cute little puppy, it is a huge responsibility and is not something that should be decided about as a Christmas gift.

and most of all... do no buy a puppy for your kids, you may tell the kids it is for them, but the responsibility of ownership is with the adult who makes the decision to get it.

I don't have a dog for these very reasons, and I see way to many dogs sitting alone at homes because the kids no longer feel like walking it.

But I tell you, if I had a dog, it would be very well cared for.

Do you have time every single day to spend with your dog, take it for walks, train it, socialize it with other animals and people? Do you know how to housebreak a dog? Do you know how to train a dog to follow your commands? Do you know how to humanely discipline your dog?

I completely agree with having and taking the time to train your dog. Too many people I know just get a pet to have a pet, and then they complain when they chew on things they shouldn't be chewing on, piss everywhere, jump up and down onto people and things. If pet owners took the time to commit to training their babies, they would be much more content knowing their pets can and like to be trained.

Taking on a dog is a massive responsibility.

Sadly, this one simple concept doesn't enter people's heads before they go out and get a dog.

Be careful of them.
