Panic Attacks Overview

Panic attacks are frightening but fortunately physically harmless episodes. They can occur at random or after a person is exposed to various events that may trigger a panic attack. They peak in intensity very rapidly and go away with or without medical help.

People experiencing panic attacks may fear they are dying or that they are suffocating. They may have chest pain or believe that they are having other symptoms of a heart attack. They may voice fears that they are going crazy and seek to remove themselves from whatever situation they may be in.

Some people may experience other associated physical symptoms. For example, they may begin breathing very rapidly and complain that they have palpitations, in that their hearts are jumping around in their chest. Then, within about an hour, the symptoms fade away.

Do you or someone you know have panic attacks?

I don't have them or know anyone that has them, but it sounds really scary.

My friend suffers from these and it is scary to even watch when she gets an attack. She never knows what's going to trigger them and she has started to stay home more often. I talked her into going to see a doctor and he gave her medication. He said it would take not only medication but she needs to seek a mental health specialist as well. She was never like this until her husband died suddenly and very unexpectedly. I wish there was more I could do for her but right now I feel helpless. I just let her talk and I just listen. I am hoping that she gets back to where she's able to just live her life without these attacks or at least get them under control.

I just recently been going through these, an yes they suck real bad. All you can do is learn how to relax your self i find deep breathing or a warm shower/bath calms me down. It's cause by stressed. BOOO Do something to keep your mind motivated an don't let it think or worry to much..

My freind had one of these whilst sitting on a horse :-/ She's fine now though.

No. I'd hate to get those.

I use to get panic attacks. I hate them. I feel like I'm going to die or faint. It's very scary for me. I use to get 10 - 12 a day when I was younger, but there are still times when under extreme stress that I will get a panic attack. I hate them.

I had an episode one day totally out of the blue. I was taken by ambulance to hospital and when they did the EC tests, I had an abnormal heart rate. By the morning I was absolutely fine so they put It down to a panic attack. Never had one before and never had one since.... wierd !!!

I sometimes get panic attacks right before having to throw up. For some reason, I've always been afraid to throw up, and when I know I can't hold on any longer, I get afraid and panic :l

It doesn't happen to me anymore, that was when I was like 12.

I had a panic attack today. I felt dizzy and feeling like I was going to pass out. This was in Wallgreens earlier today.

I only had them while being on drugs...

That must have been very scary. How long did it last?
