London Zoo has opened up England's largest penguin pool allowing visitors to see endangered species up close.

Called Penguin Beach, the new £2 million facility will be home to the zoo’s resident population of South American Humboldt and Antarctic Macaroni penguins.

With sandy beaches and rocks it may not look like the sort of place you would imagine penguins living in the wild but as Adrian Walls of London Zoo's bird section explained: “These penguins are South American and sub-Antarctic so they are used to rocky outcrops and sandy, tundra areas.”

Mr Walls hopes that having the penguins in this environment will enable them to live, breed and raise their young naturally without so much human intervention.

Penguin Beach is five times larger and three times deeper than the previous penguin pool at the zoo and features a large underwater viewing platform where visitors can watch the birds diving for food.
